5 ways to lead During Uncertain Times

When disruption becomes a constant reality, how can businesses respond without creating additional pressure within their teams?

Organizations are increasingly navigating external forces that disrupt normal operations and require rapid adaptation. During these moments of uncertainty, leadership decisions often move with urgency while employees absorb the impact of constant change.

This raises an important question: what leadership behaviors help organizations navigate uncertainty while ensuring employees feel supported, safe, and psychologically secure?

Research from Great Place to Work shows that organizations with high-trust workplace cultures that actively support employee wellbeing experience stronger engagement and better overall business outcomes. During periods of disruption, these leadership behaviors become even more essential.

Here are five ways leaders can support their people while navigating uncertain times.

1. Connect People to Purpose

In times of disruption, it becomes crucial for leaders to rally their people around a collective lived purpose. While a company’s mission and objectives might already be clear statements, the need to translate them through actionable leadership behaviors that clearly define the “why” creates better alignment across teams and allows for easier adaptation during times of crisis.

As Omaima AlAradi, People Experience & Culture Partner at Chalhoub Group Bahrain explains:

“When we started communicating, people understood clearly how the organization worked. People felt that they were a part of it, felt informed, and felt like they knew what their next steps were to grow.”

2. Prioritize Mental Health Support

High-trust organizations are steadfast in extending care toward their employees’ mental health. When the broader context is defined by uncertainty, the need to lean into mental health support becomes even more important.

Leaders can support their people’s mental health particularly through one-on-one check-in sessions, ensuring that support is tailored to individual needs and that employees feel comfortable raising concerns when needed.

3. Communicate Effectively

Great leaders ensure that their communication reflects clarity, transparency, and consistency. It is important for leaders to communicate with the understanding that every interaction is an opportunity to strengthen the level of trust between managers and employees.

Effective communication also means setting clear expectations around projects and deliverables so teams can continue to move forward with confidence even during uncertain times.

4. Trust Employees with Flexibility.

The best workplace cultures trust their employees with flexible working arrangements that meet their needs while still maintaining clear expectations around business requirements. In times of uncertainty, this level of trust becomes even more important as employees navigate changing personal and professional realities.

5. Listen Actively

Listening is a prerequisite to great leadership. During times that require empathetic and intentional listening, leaders need to set the standard. For an employee to feel heard is, by and large, a testament to a workplace experience that genuinely caters to their wellbeing.

As Dalal Bahareth, Communications Manager at Al-Dabbagh Group, shares:

One thing we’re particularly proud of is our head-to-head meetings, where every colleague gets a chance to meet with the Chairman, talk, and be heard. That simple act of being listened to, goes a long way.
